Join the Fun!
(info about this picture and the last exhibitions follow registration stuff)

Classes are Very Small- 5 students max!

These are not ordinary art classes.
Most art schools in the city place 15 plus students in a class.  My classes max out at 5- almost one on one. And since I leave time for my own art work, classes are limited.

About Me
I have a masters in art education, and one in fine arts, and am a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. It was at the Academy that I first learned- through doing- to follow my intuition, take risks, and develop the skills I needed to express myself freely.  These are all things I strive to pass on to my students.
I have been an exhibiting painter for 30 years, and an art educator for over 15.  I have taught in public, private, non-public schools, and in colleges.  And I designed the art curriculum and started the elementary art program for a city school district.

Autonomy Passed On
These tiny wonderful classes are held in my art studio.
Each child is given the freedom to develop his or her own artistic tendencies.
My experience as an artist allows me to recognize and nurture their discoveries in the materials.
Even the smallest set up and clean up, keep their colors clean and know when a piece is "done".  It is their decision.

The key word in the class is "respect"- for the student, the teacher, the art- for ones own voice.
I see the students as what they are- analytical artists.
Even the youngest work hard- and at the end of class- we dance! The students are the choreographers.

At least one formal exhibit per year is mounted of student work, to give it the importance it deserves.

New quote from parent of 3 year old-11/22/14
Today she was doing some painting at home -- and she so impressed everyone with the way she kept her colors separate and cleaned her brushes when she switched colors and how she mixed her colors in a special palate.  Someone asked her how did she learn to do that and she said "Ms. Joan."

Scroll through all posts (even the older ones) and see the work, comments by parents, and comments on my philosophy of art education- which is put into action in the classes.
Keep in mind:  students are only given red, yellow and blue and white paint.  All other colors you see, they mixed.
Also of interest:  line drawings are done with one continuous line- the students do not pick up the pencil. This keeps them from becoming too uptight- and allows them to see the connections between parts and things. This is just a place to start drawing from observation-for slightly older students.

Hope to see you here!
